March 18 Update: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lollapalooza 2020 lineup was not released today. For context, Glastonbury canceled its 2020 event this morning. I expect cancellations and postponements to continue well into the summer. Currently, there is no indication as to when Lollapalooza’s 2020 lineup will be announced. Although I have no inside information, it is fair to wonder whether the 2020 event will take place at all. Please stay safe.
Original Post. If summer festival season is the main course, winter is the aperitif. Lineup rumors, projections, confirmations, and cancellations run rampant in the lead up to lineup releases. The possibilities are (sort of) endless. In an odd way, the winter hype can be almost as fun as festival season itself.
Sitting here in February, the next major US festival to announce its lineup is Lollapalooza. In past years, tickets to Lollapalooza went on sale first, followed the following day by the release of the full lineup. Last year, single-day tickets and the daily lineup were released nearly a month later. In previous years, single day information came out much more quickly.
Historically, Lollapalooza has released its lineup in Mid-March. For example, the 2019 lineup was released on March 20, the 2018 lineup was released on March 21, and the 2017 lineup was released on March 22. Each of the foregoing dates fell on the third Wednesday of the month (with four-day passes going on sale the day before). If the trend continues, you can expect the Lollapollza 2020 lineup to be released on March 18, 2020.
With about a month to go until the lineup goes public, relive the festival season with this clip of Vampire Weekend performing at Lollapolza 2018:
